The Rogers-Dean Award 

Three $2,500 awards available for strings, woodwind, brass, and percussion.

  • Chamber Music Tuscaloosa (CMT) is pleased to announce the 2024 Rogers-Dean Award is now open and available for submissions. The awards were name to honor the String Quartet Society of Tuscaloosa founder Emily Searcy Rogers and benefactor Eugenia Dean. These awards are to support talented music students to further their studies and opportunities in the field. Three awards of $2500 each are available: (1) Best high school award (2) Best collegiate award (3) Best at-large award (high school or college).

  • High school seniors or college undergraduate instrumentalists on any string, brass, woodwind, or percussion instrument in the state of Alabama are eligible to apply for the Rogers-Dean Award. High School students can be attending public or private school or be home-schooled. College undergraduates need not be from Alabama but should be attending college in the state of Alabama.

  • Your video submissions should include at least 2 pieces in contrasting styles. You can perform more than two pieces, but the video should include no more than 20 minutes of music total. If a video exceeds 20 minutes, only the first 20 minutes of the video will be considered.

    Include in the video’s description the title of each piece, the movement (if applicable), and composer’s name.

    Pieces with additional instrumentation (i.e. piano accompaniment) should be performed with all instrumentation.

    The video should be shared via private YouTube link when submitting the application.

    What else do I need to submit for consideration?

    A complete application includes:

    ■ Your musical performance experiences (summer camps, festivals, orchestras, etc.)
    ■ Any musical honors or awards you have received
    ■ Names of your past and current music teachers and approximate dates of study. List your current teacher first.
    ○ YouTube video link (follow instructions above)
    ○ Two letters of recommendation (at least one from a music teacher)

  • 2024 applications for the Rogers-Dean Award will be due May 31, 2024.
